High-quality recyclate is essential for the raw materials transition in plastics. The market is actively seeking producers that can help meet circular economy legislation. Chemical recycling is the only route that fully converts plastic waste back into raw materials identical to their fossil-based counterparts, which can then be used to produce plastics for high-quality applications. In this project, Helix Projects is carrying out an engineering study for a chemical recycling plant at Chemelot that responds to this market demand. The plant is unique in that it integrates two processes: pyrolysis and upgrading. The intended plant will produce 200 kilotons of circular naphtha per year, directly usable as a replacement for fossil feedstock in the existing plastics value chain. The plant contributes to the development of a circular hub in South Limburg, where the processing of various waste streams and the production of recyclate come together. The project generates a major economic boost, with hundreds of future-proof jobs.
